Test SharePoint app without Forward Lookup Zone

To Run the share point apps on your environment you must have a forward lookup zone setup. But if you come into a situation if you don't have a froward lookup zone setup and you need to run a share point App.

Below are the steps which will allow you to run your sharepoint app without a Forward Lookup Zone.

Step 1. Configure you App catalogue by giving some Domain Name.



Here you need to provide the Local Computer Name or you can enter any dns as per your choice.
Step 2. Add and Install the App in your site and run the App. App will not but you need to copy the URL.

Step 3. Add entry in Registry

In this step you need to Create a key and add the App url in that.

Open the Registry on the Server and Navigate to.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > LSA > MSV1_0

Create a Multi-String Value



Key Name : BackConnectionHostNames

Add the values separated by Enter key if values are multiple

Values : app-<Key>.<Domain Name>




Step 4. Add entry in Host file

Open the Run window type "Drivers" and press on OK button
Go to etc and Open the Host file in Notepad








Add a entry :<IP Address of your Server>       <App Url>

Make sure press the TAB after entring the IP address and then App url. Save the file.

After making these changes try to open your app it will prompt for login and after that you can see your App.
